1. Overview
What a Green Lawn is a lawn care app that helps you decide when to fertilize, mow, overseed and dethatch, based on your local weather and the lawn zones you set up. This policy covers the app and this website: what they collect, how it is used, and your rights.
We collect as little as possible. We do not ask for your name, and we never receive payment details.
2. Data the app collects
2.1 Lawn zone data
When you create a lawn zone, you enter details such as grass type, mowing preferences and the area you draw on the map. This is stored in the cloud so it is still there next time you open the app. It is linked to an anonymous user ID, not to your name.
2.2 Lawn log
When you log a job such as fertilizing or mowing, the date and the details you choose to enter are stored. The app uses them to work out how long it has been since the last job and to adjust its recommendations.
2.3 Anonymous account
The app uses Firebase Anonymous Authentication. The first time you open it, a random user ID is created. You never register or log in. The ID only keeps your data separate from other users' data.
2.4 Free app opens and promo codes
New users get 3 free app opens. The count is kept on your device only. If you redeem a promo code, a device identifier is stored with the code in the cloud so the code cannot be reused on too many devices.
2.5 Location
The app asks for your location to fetch local weather and to place your lawn zone. The coordinates and the place name (for example "Vejen, Denmark") are stored with your lawn zone, linked to your anonymous user ID.
2.6 Photos
Lawn photos you add stay on your device. They are not uploaded.
2.7 App usage analytics
The app uses Google Analytics for Firebase to count how it is used: which screens are opened, steps in the setup, taps on the main buttons, and whether a subscription is active. This tells us where people get stuck. It is linked to a random app instance ID, not to your name, and it is never used for advertising.
2.8 Feedback
If you send feedback from the app, your message (and your email address, if you add one) is delivered to the developer through Slack, together with your phone model, operating system version, country setting and app version, so a reply can be accurate.
3. This website
whatagreenlawn.com works without cookies. If you allow website analytics in the banner, Google Analytics counts page views and taps on the App Store and Google Play buttons, which shows which guides help. Nothing is collected before you say yes, advertising features and Google signals are turned off, and you can change your answer at any time under Analytics settings at the bottom of every page. Choosing no also removes the analytics cookies.
The site is hosted on Firebase Hosting, which processes your IP address to deliver the pages.
4. How the data is used
- Personal recommendations: lawn zone data, lawn log and location.
- Keeping your data between sessions: the anonymous user ID.
- Free opens and promo codes: the open count on your device, and the device identifier if you redeem a code.
- Improving the app and the guides: app usage analytics and, if you allow it, website analytics.
- Answering you: feedback you send.
We do not use your data for advertising and we do not sell it. We only share it with the services below.
5. Services that process data
- Google Firebase (Authentication, Firestore, Analytics, Remote Config, Hosting) stores your lawn data, lawn log and redeemed promo codes, and handles the anonymous account and analytics. Google uses Standard Contractual Clauses for transfers outside the EU. firebase.google.com/support/privacy
- OpenWeatherMap receives your coordinates to return local weather. It receives none of your lawn data. openweathermap.org/privacy-policy
- Slack delivers feedback you send to the developer. slack.com/trust/privacy
- Apple and Google handle subscriptions and billing. We never receive your payment details. apple.com/legal/privacy, policies.google.com/privacy
6. How long it is kept
Lawn data and your lawn log are kept while you use the app. Deleting a lawn zone in the app deletes its data. To have your anonymous account and everything linked to it deleted, email devjakobsen@gmail.com and it will be done within 30 days. A redeemed promo code keeps its device identifier for as long as the code exists. Analytics event data is kept for the retention period set in Google Analytics (2 months by default). Feedback is kept as long as it is needed to answer and follow up.
7. Your rights
If you are in the EU or EEA, the GDPR gives you the right to:
- get a copy of the data we hold about you,
- have it corrected or deleted,
- receive it in a portable format,
- object to processing based on legitimate interest,
- complain to the Danish Data Protection Agency (Datatilsynet) at datatilsynet.dk.

8. Children
The app is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect data from children.
9. Changes
If this policy changes in a meaningful way, the effective date at the top changes with it. Using the app after an update means you accept the updated policy.
