Wet grass is heavy, bends over and sticks to everything. A mower that cuts dry grass cleanly will tear wet blades, pack clippings under the deck and leave a patchy finish. Usually the best move is simply to wait a few hours.
Why is mowing wet grass a problem?
- Ragged cut. Wet blades bend away from the mower and tear. Torn tips turn brown in a day or two and give disease an easy way in.
- Clumping. Wet clippings stick together, clog the deck and drop in clumps that smother the grass below.
- Ruts and compaction. Soft soil takes wheel marks, and a heavy mower compacts it.
- Uneven finish. Grass flattened by rain springs back up later, so the lawn looks uneven the next day.
- Slips. Wet slopes are a real risk with any mower, and corded electric mowers add an electrical one.
How long should you wait after rain or dew?
Until the blades are dry. After a light shower on a sunny, breezy day, that can be two or three hours. After heavy rain, also wait until the ground no longer squelches underfoot. Morning dew usually burns off by mid to late morning; evening mowing runs into the next dew. A quick test: walk across the lawn in dry shoes. If they get soaked or clippings stick, wait.

What if a rainy week leaves no choice?
If the grass is nearing one and a half times your mowing height and the forecast from the National Weather Service shows more rain, mowing slightly wet is better than letting it get too long.
- Raise the deck about half an inch.
- Use a sharp blade. A dull blade tears even dry grass.
- Walk slowly and overlap passes, so the mower is not overloaded.
- Empty the bag often, or bag instead of mulching, so clippings do not clump.
- Avoid tight turns and soft, low spots, and skip slopes.
- Clean the deck right after, before clippings dry on.

Do robot mowers mind wet grass?
Less than push mowers. They cut only the tips, so clippings stay small. Soft ground is still a problem: wheels slip and rut. Many robots have rain sensors and head home. The app raises the height by only about 0.2 inches for robots when it is wet.
